Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed largely of the minerals calcite and aragonite, which are different crystal forms of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Most limestone is composed of skeletal fragments of marine organisms such as coral or foraminifera. The fusion and fossilisation of these organisms over millions of years is what creates the characteristic mocha coloured veins on the light back ground, intermingled with fossils of plants and animal life all add to the individuality of the wonderful material. To find blooms, lighter or darker veins, “wisps” of fossilised fern leaves & other unique features are not considered defects but are part of the natural beauty the earth brings meaning each fireplace created will have a unique look to it.
Agean matt finished limestone is also a sedimentary rock formed over millions of years & quarried from the mountains of Turkey. The characteristics of this stone are its smooth texture, whitish base colour, speckled grain & small fossils compared to the veining of Portuguese Limestone.
As well as the limestone specific range below, all our marble fireplaces can also be made from it. If you cannot see what yuo are looking for, jot down a little sketch and we will make it for you!
